BJP MLA brother booked in assault case in Bhayandar

The accused hurled abuses at the victims and threatened to launch brutal assault if they answered any phone calls or made one.

Mumbai: The Navghar police in Thane booked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Narendra Mehta’s brother on Saturday for allegedly assaulting and confining people who were distributing pamphlets of an independent candidate in Mira Road.

The accused were identified as Vinod Mehta and two of his unidentified bouncers, who were travelling in a Fortuner car, officials said.

The incident unfolded after the trio arrived at around 4 pm at Sai Nagar area in Bhayandar (east). They assaulted Shubham Salaskar (23), Mahesh Bandia (19), Meet Patel (19) and Yash Patel, all residents of Narmada Nagar area.

“The victims were present in polling centre 145 for distributing pamphlets in support of independent candidate Pradip Jangam when they were allegedly bundled inside the Fortuner and were slapped,” stated a police statement.

The accused allegedly bundled them inside the car, locked the doors, and began the assault. The accused hurled abuses at the victims and threatened to launch brutal assault if they answered any phone calls or made one.

The complaint was registered after they were released after intervention of locals.

A case has been filed against the accused under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (provoking breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts of common intention) as per the IPC.

The police has not arrested any of the booked accused in the case and are probing the case further.
