More than 26,000 women abducted in last 5 yrs in state

During the same period, 21,652 above-18 women were abducted, of which 19,686 were found and 1,966 are still missing.

Mumbai: In a shocking statistics indicating growing crimes against women in the state, more than 26,000 women and girls have been abducted in Maharashtra in last five years. While 24,444 of them have been found, 2,264 are still missing.

The chief minister Devendra Fadnavis informed this to the state Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, while replying to a question by BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha. In the last five years, 26,708 women and girls have been abducted in the state, he said.

“In the year 2016, the state ranks 12th in the country in terms of population. Total 4,422 cases of abduction of girls have been registered in the state during this period,” said Mr Fadnavis.

According to the information provided by Mr Fadnavis, during the five-year period from 2013 to 2017, 5,056 under 18 girls were abducted in the state. Of them, 4,758 were found, while 298 are still missing. During the same period, 21,652 above-18 women were abducted, of which 19,686 were found and 1,966 are still missing.

As per the figures of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and Maharashtra Crime 2016 report, 10 cases of human trafficking were reported in the year 2016 that included 53 victims. During the same period, 8,518 cases were registered for crimes against kids including 8,908 total numbers of victims.

Mr Fadnavis told the House that it has been proposed to form a task force in 24 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, to prominently bring back child beggars. For this, a child welfare officer will be appointed in the police stations. In addition to this, a toll-free helpline (1098) has also been activated to trace the abducted children.
