Mumbai: A speeding Mercedes car rammed into two motorbike-borne constables working with the Cuffe Parade police, in Colaba on Monday night. The two cops were injured in the incident, even as the car driver fled the spot and is still absconding. Both the constables, who were returning home from their shift at the police station, sustained fractures in their right leg.

The accident occurred around 11.20 pm on Monday on M.K. Road near Cooperage Ground in Colaba. While the police seized the Mercedes, they are taking the help of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to track down its owner and the driver. While cops are searching for the accused driver, they have information that he could be a man with the first name of ‘Vishal’, said a police source. The injured constables, Ramchandra Lokhande (48) and Nitin Chavan (32), are admitted in the ICU ward of the privately-run Bombay Hospital.

While Mr Lokhande is a resident of Worli police quarters, Mr Chavan stays at Naigaon. Both of them were travelling on a bike when the Mercedes rammed into their vehicle on M.K. Road near Shalaka apartments. A police official attached with the Cuffe Parade police station confirmed the incident and said that the moment the car collided with the motorcycle, the bike fell to the right-hand side of the road. “Both the constables suffered fractures on their right leg,” the official said.

He added that at the time of the incident, both the constables were wearing a helmet, which broke into pieces the moment they fell down on the road.

Both the policemen were rushed to Bombay Hospital, where they are in the Intensive Care Unit at present, going through treatment there, informed a senior police official attached with Cuffe Parade police station.

The car driver, however, fled the scene at the very moment that he saw the constables fall to the left of his vehicle. The police is now taking help from RTO officials to identify the owner and driver of the car via its registration number. According to sources, when police officials visited the RTO, they discovered that the first name of the car owner is ‘Vishal’ and now investigation is on in this direction.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the car driver was speeding when the incident occurred.

A case has been registered against the driver under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
