Mumbai Marathon: Two runners end up in hospital
They are being treated at the trust-run Bombay Hospital.
Mumbai: The 15th edition of the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2018 turned out to an unfortunate day for two half-marathon participants, who ended up in the hospital owing to health issues. Pramod Singh Girase (45) suffered a cardiac arrest, while Sukesh Kabra (46) suffered a brain stroke that paralysed the left side of his body. They are being treated at the trust-run Bombay Hospital.
Several other runners complained of muscle cramps, dehydration, minor injuries and exhaustion. However, if compared to the figures of last year, the number of injured participants was less. A total of 2,300 runners this year suffered from health problems, 200 less than the last year’s number of 2,500. Last year, 15
runners had suffered from dehydration. This year, the number came down to six.
The two medical base camps at the venue oversaw the cases of hospitalisation pertaining to the marathon. Of the six patients suffering from dehydration, four were cases of severe dehydration. They were given intravenous re-hydration therapy at the camp and were admitted to nearby hospitals and were subsequently discharged.
The Asian Heart Institute was among the medical aid providers. Around 20 volunteers from the institute were stationed near the Worli Dairy to assist the runners with ice packs and sprays for sprains and aches. They also had a supply of juice and water.
Many participants were spotted eating oranges and salt from the stall of a private company to maintain their energy.
