South Mumbai college kids need quota, says BJP MLA

Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Raj Purohit has demanded that south Mumbai colleges should admit south Mumbai students on priority basis.

The MLA said that he had received various complaints from the parents of students from his area, who have to travel to the suburbs. Since there are enough colleges in south Mumbai, he demanded that at least 25 per cent of the seats here should be reserved for south Mumbai students.

The MLA said,  “People residing in areas like Thakurdwar, Chira Baazar, Fanaswadi, Koliwali, Kalbadevi, Mumbadevi, Vhuleshwar, Dhobitalao, Pydhoni, Colaba, Fort, Marine Lines, Mohammed Ali Road, Bhatbazar, Umarkhadi, Mandi and Bhendibazar are mostly from the middleclass and cannot afford the travelling expenses. The students almost always have to travel two hours which is stressful and tiresome, especially for girls, if they are travelling late in the evening,” he added.

Mr Purohit stated that he would raise his demand for 25 percent reservation of the seats in south Mumbai colleges for south Mumbai students in the assembly and will try to ensure that proper justice is done.

The focus of college administrations should be the admission process and it should consider the problems faced by parents.
Students from areas like Thakurdwar, Chira Baazar, Fanaswadi, Koliwali, Kalbadevi, Mumbadevi, Bhuleshwar, Dhobitalao, Pydhoni, Colaba, Fort, Marine Lines, Mohammed Ali Road, Bhatbazar, Umarkhadi, Mandi and Bhendibazar are mostly middle class
Travelling from south Mumbai to the suburbs places a financial burden on parents of students belonging to the middle class
It is especially tough on girl students, as they have to travel almost two hours everyday, also causing their parents a lot of tension.
There are so many local colleges at south Mumbai. Hence at least 25% seats can be reserved for students from the area.
