Pune: The four activists —Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut, Rona Wilson and Sudhir Dhawale — arrested on June 6 for alleged naxal ties were remanded in judicial custody till July 4 by a city court on Thursday.

The activists will be shifted to Yerwada central jail after their medical check-up is carried out at Sasson General Hospital. Public prosecutor Ujjawala Pawar at the beginning of the hearing on Thursday said that the police wanted judicial custody as its investigation was over as of now. However, she added that the police wanted to extend police custody as well as it was awaiting forensic reports pertaining to several documents seized from the activists.

The defence requested that Ms Sen and Mr Raut who were undergoing treatment for their ailments should be able to continue the medication they were having before being arrested. Ms Sen has severe arthritis and blood pressure while Mr Raut suffers from a stomach ulcer.

Sidhartha Patil, defence lawyer, said, “We will submit an application for our demands. Ms Sen also wants a chair or a cot as she has problems squatting.”

Meanwhile, Women against Sexual Harassment and State Repression (WSS) on Wednesday initiated a drive on Twitter, demanding release of all the arrested activists. Within two hours, they texted over 5,000 times with the hash tag Defend Dissent.
