Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to give a scholarship to ten students each from the open and Other Backward Class (OBC) categories to go abroad for further studies. The state government will bear the cost of the course as well as give $1,500 per month to all these students. Seven candidates selected for the fellowship will be PhD students while the rest will be degree or diploma students.
Education minister Vinod Tawde made this announcement on Tuesday after a Cabinet meeting. “The Maharashtra Cabinet has taken an important decision to give financial assistance to bright students from open as well as OBC categories,” said Mr Tawde.
The student-selection committee will have secretaries from the higher education, finance, industry and skill development departments. The process of student selection will consider the marks of these students from Classes 10 and 12.
“The state government will give $1,500 per month to each of these twenty students. This scheme will be implemented from this year itself. The state government has also decided to bear the cost of the entire course,” said Mr Tawde.
