Police bust gang involved in fake birth certificates

Probe revealed that the accused agents would pay him hefty sum for getting the forged certificates.

Mumbai: The D.N. Nagar police station busted a racket of middlemen who was procuring forged birth certificates from BMC’s ‘R’ ward office. Among the arrested persons is a BMC officer who took commission and issued the certificates without seeking any documents. The accused persons were apprehended in possession of around 50 more forged birth certificates.

A team of D.N. Nagar police sent a decoy after they were tipped off about the racket. The decoy procured a certificate for date November 10, 1978 when his birth date is May 24, 1985. The certificate was procured within five days by the decoy.

The arrested accused were identified as Sunil Bhosale (48), officer attached with Health Department of the ‘R’ Central ward entrusted with the maintaining if birth and death record in his ward along with the agents Mahendra Chauhan alias Shyam (39), Bharatkumar Kholiya (47) and Anil Lambade (47).

The probe revealed that the accused agents would pay him hefty sum for getting the forged certificates.

“The certificates were issued without submission or verification of any documents. They were issued without verification of place of birth and mostly to the outsiders,” said an officer of D.N. Nagar police station.

The police have registered a case against all the accused for cheating, forgery, forging documents, acts of common intention as per the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and they have been remanded to police custody for further investigation. The police are now in the process of tracing those persons who succeeded in procuring those certificates.
