Versova-Lokhandwala link road will destroy mangroves'
The petition has said that construction of the road does not follow sustainable development.
Mumbai: The Bombay high court has issued notices to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) and Union of India to file a reply to a petition opposing the construction of a link road between Versova and Lokhandwala.
The petitioners have alleged that mangroves will be destroyed if this construction is allowed and also stated that if the road is constructed, traffic problems will not get solved. A division bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice N.M. Jamdar was hearing a PIL filed by the residents of Versova-Andheri.
According to the petitioners, the BMC and government will construct a link road between Versova and Lokhandwala which has been proposed in a way that it passes over the now thriving mangroves in and around the Versova coast.
Residents also brought information from the website that the government was planning to construct three link roads which would pass through the mangroves. The petition has said that construction of the road does not follow sustainable development.
The petition has stated that proposed road construction does not seem to relieve present traffic situation in the area in any manner. On the contrary, it will increase traffic bottlenecks.
