IMD should make precise forecast: BMC

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that weather predictions of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) needs to be ‘more precise.’ The civic body has also demanded a separate weather forecast for the city for better disaster management preparations. In the probe report of Dr Deepak Amrapurkar’s death case, the BMC’s inquiry panel has insisted on accurate weather predictions.

“Many a time, predications from the IMD are quantitative and devoid of area wise details. These are mostly rough forecast, due to which there is a possibility that disaster management preparations are over-activated or under-activated. Taking this into consideration, the met department should make predictions based on ‘place, time and scale.’ This would help the civic body make better disaster management preparations,” said the report.

Instead of making overall prediction for Mumbai and the Konkan region, it should make separate predictions for the city. In addition to this, areawise and zonewise forecast would be helpful for taking measures for the safety of citizens. The predictions should also contain areawise details about rainfall, time, intensity, said the report.

The BMC’s disaster management cell’s report too had blamed the IMD.

Despite repeated attempts, officials from the IMD were not available for comments.
