Police to catalogue Iqbal Kaskar's contacts
Unknown numbers in his CDR are being verified by Thane police.
Mumbai: The revelation that c’s call detail records (CDR) had several Dubai-based numbers on which he had made calls via cell phone has prompted the Thane city police’s crime branch to make a database of the phone numbers.
The police suspects that members of Ibrahim’s gang were spread in Nashik where Kaskar visited frequently to meet a relative named Jaggi Kokani, who also had cases registered against him. The crime branch is likely to question Kokani who is suspected to be running the extortion racket in Nashik at the behest of Kaskar for the D-gang.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Girish Mahajan had come in the eye of the storm for attending Kokani’s daughter’s wedding in Nashik in May this year. An inquiry was ordered by Nashik police commissioner after it came to the fore that several policemen had also attended the lavish function.
Kaskar had been speaking with his wife and relatives, who reside in Dubai, but there are several other unknown numbers that are being verified by the anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the crime branch.
“We are looking for the identities of the persons who were using those numbers found in his phone book list. The numbers are many and the calls were made and received by two of his cell phones that have been seized,” said a crime branch officer.
Kaskar’s passport was seized after he was extradited from the United Arab Emirates in 2003. The police has now learnt that though he could not leave the country, he had been visiting Thane and Nashik very often.
“His Thane and Nashik visits are suspected to be related to running the extortion racket. We will summon Kokani for questioning in the case to find more on what unfolded in his meeting with Kaskar, who had stayed away from the family wedding in May 2017,” added the officer.
The investigation has also thrown up five new names of the gang’s henchmen who were part of the extortion racket run in Thane. The accused persons are from the Mumbai-Thane belt and they are being tracked down for being questioned.
