Mumbai rains to pick up pace

Mumbai: The intensity of rains is expected to increase slightly in Mumbai in the coming days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). At present, a depression lies over the southwest part of Madhya Pradesh, which will be moving north-westwards, resulting in rains in a few parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai.

Elaborating on the weather system, an IMD official said, “It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and then recurve north northeastwards and weaken into a well mark low pressure area during next 24 hours.” According to the IMD, a few spells of light to moderate rains are likely to occur in city suburbs in next 48 hours.

Weather experts have stated that Mumbai has been rain deficit by 10 per cent this monsoon. Among the four months since June, July was the only month where good rainfall activity was observed in the city.

According to the Skymet weather, a private weather forecasting agency, August rains were very poor as less than half of actual rains were recorded i.e. 235 mm against its normal of 585 mm. “Further the same pattern continued in the month of September as well. Till now, Mumbai has only recorded 44 mm of rain as compared to its monthly average of 341.4 mm. We now expect Mumbai rains to pick up pace,” read the Skymet Weather report.

According to weathermen, the depression is seen in the Bay of Bengal and is expected to move inland, giving good rains over eastern and central parts of India. Along with this, a feeble cyclonic circulation also lies over Konkan and Goa coast. Due to the combined effect of both, light to moderate rainfall activity is expected over Mumbai.
