Civic body to act against concerned area officials
The state governement had imposed plastic ban on March 23 that came into effect on June 23.
Mumbai: For the strict implementation of plastic ban, the Brihanmum-bai Municipal Corpo-ration (BMC) has decided to take action against the concerned civic official if plastic bags are found with hawkers or shopkeepers in his zone.
“The BMC has continued its action against the banned plastic in all the seven administrative zones. However, to make it more effective, we have decided to fix the accountability on the concerned official, who has been entrusted with the implementation of ban. Action will be taken against him if plastic bags are found with the hawkers or shopkeepers in his zone,” said Vijay Bala-mwar, deputy municipal commissioner.
The BMC has formed a team of over 310 inspectors from three departments – market, license and shops and establishments – to take action against banned plastic in the city.
These officials have been given jackets stating specifically that they belong to the plastic ban squad and also authorisation letters from the BMC. The teams of inspectors have been visiting shops, malls, markets, hawkers and vendors to crack a whip on banned plastic.
“The decision to fix the accountability has started showing good results as the drive have become more stringent. At some places it was found that the people continue to use of plastic bags. We have asked the officials to be more strict at such places,” said Mr Balamwar.
