Mumbai: Officers of the Mumbai Fire Brigade have made it clear that they will only carry out firefighting activities henceforth and not verify fire safety norms in establishments.

In a meeting held with fire officials, the Fire Brigade Officers’ Association (FBOA) said that fire officials are already overloaded with firefighting work and the work of verifying fire safety compliance is proving to be a burden on them.

Prakash Devidas, president of the FBOA, said, “We have decided to issue a notice to the municipal commissioner asking him to withdraw the verification work within a week. If this is not done, fire officers will not carry out such work further.”

In the wake of the tragic fire at Kamala Mills compound fire, which claimed two lives, the police had arrested Worli fire station officer Rajendra Patil, who had issued an NOC to the restaurants 1 Above and Mojo’s Bistro, where the flames broke out on December 29 2017, following an inspection.

“There is no proper system to check the compliance of fire safety norms. It is also the responsibility of health and engineering department to ensure that all safety measures are in place,” said Mr Devidas.
