State records highest-ever power demand at 24K MW
On October 16, the total demand was 24,922 MW, of which, Mahavitaran registered a demand of 21,542 MW.
Mumbai: Thanks to soaring mercury levels in October, the demand for power has shot up to 24,962 megawatts (MW) on Monday, which is the highest ever across Maharashtra, leading to load-shedding of 900 MW due to a shortfall of power, an official from the energy department said.
In Maharashtra (except Mumbai), the demand for power was 21,580 MW in areas covered by the the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Comp-any (MSEDCL), also known as Mahavitaran.
The power demand in Mumbai was 3,382 MW. While the island city of Mumbai gets its power supply from the Brihanmumbai Elec-tric Supply & Transport (BEST), the suburbs get electricity either from Ta-ta Power or Adani Tran-smission. An official from the state power department said that due to the October heat, demand for electricity was continuously rising. “More electricity demand is being registered in October than in summer. On October 16, the total demand was 24,922 MW, of which, Mahavitaran registered a demand of 21,542 MW. On October 17, the total demand was 24,687 MW, of which, Mahavitaran registered 21,223 MW demand. On October 22, the demand shot up to 24,962 MW,” he said.
