Heavy rains claim two lives in the city

Mumbai: Two persons died in two separate incidents as Mumbai witnessed intermittent heavy rainfall on Sunday. A senior citizen person died to a tree collapse at Azad Maidan while another died in a fire that broke out in a three-storey building at Girgaum.

According to civic officials, five people were injured in a tree collapse on MG Road near Home Guard Office near Metro Cinema at Azad Maidan at about 6 pm. The injured were rushed to GT Hospital. Of them, Barsingh (60 years) was declared brought dead, whereas another 60-years-old person named as Singh has been admitted in ICU and his condition is critical. The condition of other three-Santosh Singh (28), Ram Vilas Soni (55) and Salimuddin Shaikh (48)- is stable. At Girgaum, a fire broke out in a ground plus three-storey building in which one unknown person died. The blaze erupted at about 6 pm at Kothari House building on Goregaonkar lane, near Center Plaza Cinema, Girgaum. The blaze affected second and third floors of the building. The fire brigade used six fire tenders to douse the fire. An unknown person aged 35 to 40-years-old was injured in the fire and rushed to the nearby Saifee Hospital. However, he was declared brought dead, said civic officials.

Meanwhile, Mumbai received heavy rainfall at several parts of the city on Sunday, bringing respite from the warm and humid weather. Malad (west) recorded the highest rainfall at 110.80 mm.

Powai, with 77.80mm of rainfall, and Mulund (west), with 76mm rainfall, during the same period stood second and third respectively. Coastal areas of the city like Colaba, Mazgaon and Worli received less rainfall in comparison.

Twenty-four hours since Saturday at 8.30 am the Colaba observatory recorded rainfall amounting to a whopping 151mm. The Santacruz observatory, however, recorded 32mm of rainfall. Intermittent rains are expected to occur for another two days, according to the weather department.

The continuous rains over Sunday have brought down the maximum temperatures in the city. The Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius while the Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 27.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature recorded for the day was 22.8 degrees Celsius.

There were a few tree felling incidents reported on Sunday, including a huge tree that came crashing down near the Bhayandar police station at around 6 am on Sunday. An auto-rickshaw, which was parked near the tree, was crushed and reduced to a mangled heap of metal. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
