Mumbai: Following the death of a person in Govandi due to wrong medical treatment on November 8, special police teams launched a crackdown and arrested three alleged quacks on Friday.

The three bogus doctors were operating without a valid medical degree in the Govandi-Kurla belt. The arrested accused were identified as Zaheer Ahmed Shaikh (36), who is HSC pass, Farmanali Hussain Baig (21), a Class 11 pass and Asif Wali Ahmed Shaikh, a Class 8 pass.

The trio was found to be operating in Nehru Nagar, Govandi and Tilak Nagar areas. The police had started gathering details about quacks after 25-year-old Pradip Jadhav died due to alleged medical negligence.

The Deonar police investigated the matter and found out that the doctor who treated Jadhav did not have a medical degree.

“The raids were carried out in the presence of municipal corporation’s health department officers and independent witnesses. Their documents were checked and we found that they were registered in some other person’s names,” said Shahaji Umap, deputy commissioner of police, zone VI.

The police has seized the documents and certificates, which include BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery), BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) and BSc degrees and is on the lookout for the owners of those degrees.
