Relief for city as Tansa overflows

Mumbai: The Tansa Lake — one of the seven lakes that supply water to the city —started overflowing  on Thursday afternoon after heavy rainfall over the past two days.

The Tansa reservoir provides 450 million litres of water to Mumbai on a daily basis. The heavy rainfall has come as a relief as the water stock of all seven lakes put together reached 58 per cent as of Thursday morning.

Tansa, located in the adjoining Thane district, is the second water body after Tulsi Lake to get filled to the brim.

“The Tansa lake started overflowing Thursday at 2.50 pm. Last year, this lake had overflowed on July 17 at 6.15 am. The Tulsi Lake, another lake supplying water to Mumbai, started overflowing on July 12 this year.”

“The total capacity of Tansa is 148,080 million litres which has filled 100 per cent now. Overall, other lakes including the Modak Sagar is filled 80 to 85 per cent, Middle Vaitarna 74 per cent, Upper Vaitarna 15 per cent, Bhatsa 53 per cent, Vihar 67 per cent and Tulsi already overflowed. The overall percentage of total current water stock is 58. It is expected that as on October 1, all seven lakes should be 100 per cent filled”, said hydraulic engineer Ashok Tawadia.

With the rising water level in these lakes, the BMC last week rolled back the 10 per cent water cut that was in force since November last year.
