Mumbai: As the country will commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary on October 2, Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) have been instructed by the railway minister to ensure cleanliness on railway premises in their respective jurisdictions. The WR has planned to use mechanised cleaning machines at its stations while it will also promote renovate, operate, maintain and transfer (ROMT) toilets. The tender is at the final stage for Churchgate and Mumbai Central stations. The CR has given a deadline to its officials to bring about a visible improvement in cleanliness at stations and toilets by September end.
A senior official of the WR said that railway minister, Piyush Goel, has given clear instructions to upgrade the level of cleanliness on the stations and maintain cleanliness in pay and use toilets.
A CR official said, “D.K. Sharma, general manager of CR has directed all senior divisional commercial managers to manage the toilets through corporate social responsibility or NGO or Sulabh International.” Mr Sharma has also instructed the officials to construct toilets for Divyangjan (disabled person) as per norms laid down by the law.
