Mumbai: A 21-year-old worker died in an accident while working on the Metro-7 corridor, from Andheri (east) to Dahisar (east) around 2 am on Saturday.  According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the accident took place due to a mechanical problem with a crane. The victim was first taken to Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma centre and then to Siddharth Municipal Hospital where he was declared dead.

Stating the agency would pay compensation to the family of the victim according to the rules, an MMRDA spokesperson said, “The MMRDA has directed the general consultants and related agency to inquire and submit report within three days. The authority has also directed the contractors to re-train all crane operators immediately.”

A statement released by the MMRDA stated, “In an unfortunate accident that took place early today morning, a labourer, Hari Om Yadav  (21), suffered fatal injuries while preparation for pier cap (P-196) erection at Pkg 1 Simplex site on the Dahisar-Andheri Metro-7 corridor was in progress.  Prima facie, the accident took place due to mechanical problem of the crane while pulling in the rear right outrigger of the crane (for positioning). The rigger suddenly pulled and hit the labourer on his head.”

This is the third accident to have occurred on the Metro-7 corridor construction site. In October, iron rods had tilted on a service road on the Western Express Highway after getting hit by a crane. A similar incident took place in June.
