Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research and Balbharti, a part of the state education department, have introduced new textbooks for the new curriculum for class 10 students of the Maharashtra Board. The new textbooks will be provided to students from the coming academic year, 2018-19.

According to sources at the department, the new textbooks have updated content and lessons as well as technical changes. A senior official of the department said, “We cannot reveal the exact change as it is confidential but educators, principals and experts from various parts of the state have come together to design the new curriculum.” A special committee had been formed for the same.

The students of class 10 and their parents will be introduced to the new textbooks on April 4. The department has arranged a special workshop and interactive session for them at Shivaji Natya Mandir, Dadar, to give them insight into the new content, syllabus and marking system for exams. The teachers too will be given training in the new curriculumfrom April 5 at various centres in the state.

Although the state government, through a circular, has informed all schools and teachers about the change, they, too, don’t know what the change is going to be.

The principal of a Vashi-based school said, “Like everyone, we too are waiting for the department to reveal what's in the new textbooks. However, this change was bound to be and we only welcome it.”

Teachers however will be faced with a hectic schedule as by the time the workshops and training starts, they will be busy with assessment of SSC papers of 2017-18.

For the last academic year, 2017-18, the department changed the curriculum and textbooks of class 7 and 9 students of the state board. However, due to delay in the production and printing of these textbooks, these students got their textbooks one month after the academic year began.
