Major vehicle pile-up on Mumbai-Pune E-way

Accident took place at Khalapur near Mumbai-Pune E-way

Mumbai: A massive collision between as many as six vehicles left nine persons injured, of which, two are said to be critical, and resulted in chaos on the Mumbai-Pune expressway near Khalapur on Saturday. Many motorists from Mumbai, who were headed out of the city for the weekend, were stranded for over 30 minutes due to the accident.

According to state highway police sources, the accident occurred near the toll plaza at 12pm on Saturday after a speeding container truck applied sudden brakes, causing the vehicles behind it to ram into each other, leaving a major pile-up on the highway. Nine persons suffered injuries, of which, two suffered grievous injuries. All injured persons were rushed to a hospital in Panvel. The vehicle pile-up was cleared in 45 minutes with the help of a towing van and personnel from the state highway police as well as traffic police.

Last month, five persons died and three others were injured in an early morning accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, when a speeding tempo hit an Omni van from behind.
