Mumbai: The Plastic Bag Manufacturers’ Association of India (PBMAI) has installed manned plastic waste collection bins in zones with high footfalls, including Chowpatty and Juhu Beach, CSTM and Mumbai Central railway station, ST bus depot, Haji Ali, Mumbadevi, Mahalaxmi and Siddhivinayak temple.

It has initiated a 90-day cleanliness camp at high footfall venues in various districts of the state, including Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivali, Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Latur and Nagpur.

Saumil Shah, chief coordinator, PBMAI, said, “Each passerby is being educated to dispose of used plastic bags, containers, multi-layered laminate packs of FMCG products, pet bottles etc. into specially marked plastic bins. PBMAI volunteers have also made themselves accountable for all littered plastic at these locations and collecting it for recycling.”

The PBMAI is actively participating by deputing its volunteers to suburban housing societies. “Our immediate task is to make these premises plastic litter-free. Subsequently, we will educate residents to surrender all banned, single-use, below 50 micron plastic and further, all other consumed plastic for recycling. We are assisting housing societies to consolidate and directly sell their plastic waste to recyclers, or get it collected by the BMC,” said Mr. Shah.
