FYJC admissions likely to continue till mid-August

MUMBAI: The state education department on Thursday issued a new, revised schedule for the third and fourth general merit lists for the ongoing first year junior college (FYJC) admissions. As per the new schedule, the third list will be out on July 31 and the fourth on August 7.

With the admission process having been extended to the second week of August, colleges are worried about completing the syllabus and conducting extra lectures for students who take late admissions.

According to department rules, once a college filled 70 per cent seats, classes can be started for the FYJC students. However, since minority seats in minority colleges are still waiting to be filled, college principals are worried if this academic year is going to be messy.

The principal of a Bandra-based college said, “The admissions will extend up to mid-August and after that, we will start filling up the minority seats so probably, the entire month will go after that. Furthermore, before the Diwali vacations (which fall in the month of November), we should conduct the first semester exams, which means we also need to cover the entire syllabus and internal exams. Our aim is to not let students face any kind of trouble or pressure but these delays in admissions will give them a bad start.”

On Wednesday, the Nagpur bench of the high court directed all minority colleges to surrender their vacant seats in the in-house quota to the department i.e. the general category.

After surrendering the seats, the department will update the total number of vacant seats for general category students.
