Court directs registry to pay Pune teachers directly
The arrears were part of the grant that the government had to pay SGI as reimbursement for admitting students belonging to the reserved category.
Mumbai: In a major relief for around 4,000 teachers and employees of Pune’s Sinhgad Group of Institutions (SGI), the Bombay high court has directed the registry to encash the cheque deposited by the government towards payment of arrears of Rs 117 crore for paying their salaries directly rather than transferring the amount to the institute.
The arrears were part of the grant that the government had to pay SGI as reimbursement for admitting students belonging to the reserved category.
The institute approached the court after Pune University suggested appointment of an administrator following complaints by teachers of not receiving their salaries.
The court also restrained the university from appointing an administrator.
A division bench was hearing a petition filed by the Sinhagad Technical Institution and other sister institutions, seeking directions restraining Pune University from appointing an administrator.
SGI stated that it had been unable to pay salaries as it had not received the reimbursement from the state. The court then directed the government to expedite the payment.
