Mumbai: A 20-year-old woman travelling to Mumbai in a long-distance train gave birth to a baby in a clinic at Thane railway station early Saturday.

Pooja Munna Chauhan, who was travelling by Kokan Kanya Express, started experiencing labour pains around 5.40 am. When the train halted at Thane railway station, the station manager asked the One Rupee Clinic staff to attend to the patient.

Ms Chauhan was travelling in the train when her water broke following which the train halted at Thane station. The stationmaster rang the emergency alarm and reported to the ‘One Rupee Clinic’. Later, medicos and paramedic staff rushed to attend the patient.

Dr Rahul Ghule and CEO of the One Rupee Clinic told The Asian Age, “After receiving a medical emergency request of labour pain, our staff went to see the patient and found that the baby’s head had almost come out.”

“The delivery process had initiated and patient Ms Chauhan was in the toilet with the baby’s head almost coming out. We immediately shifted her to the ‘One Rupee Clinic’ and completed the delivery process,” he said.

The patient delivered a normal and healthy baby girl. Both the mother and daughter have been shifted to the civil hospital for further treatment. “Both mother and child are in good health,” said Dr Omkar, who has assisted the delivery.

“We thank the railway authority for giving us an opportunity to run emergency medical room (EMR) through One Rupee Clinics at Thane. This is the seventh delivery at the One Rupee Clinic and the fourth at the Thane branch,” said Dr Ghule.

The child and mother were later shifted to a civil hospital, he added.
