Women Commission seeks report on Byculla inmate death
Commission has taken suo moto cognisance of the incident under section 10 (1) (k) of the Maharashtra State Women Commission Rules, 1993.
Mumbai: Taking suo moto cognisance of the Byculla jail incident wherein a female inmate died after being assaulted by the jail authorities, the Maharashtra State Commission for Women has asked the additional director general of prisons to appear before it on June 29.
Meanwhile, Jai Ho Foundation, an NGO working on human rights issues, has requested the Bombay HC chief justice to order a CBI probe into the Byculla jail incident on June 23, 2017 wherein an inmate Manjula Shetye was allegedly assaulted to death by jailors for raising the issue of shortage of rations.
The commission has taken suo moto cognisance of the incident under section 10 (1) (k) of the Maharashtra State Women Commission Rules, 1993. The commission’s notice said the jailor and employees of the jail were guilty and hence they were holding an inquiry.
