Attendance after exams not compulsory, says Vinod Tawde

Mumbai: Education minister Vinod Tawde on Wednesday announced the revoking of the decision of making attendance compulsory in schools till April 30.

The state government had come up with a notification making student’s attendance compulsory even after the conclusion of the final exams of the year. Usually by April 15, all exams are over and the results are announced during May 1-May 5. Speaking in the state legislative council, Mr Tawde announced that the decision stands cancelled for 2018.  

News reports appeared on Wednesday which suggest alteration of rule about school period in the end of educational year. Earlier students used to stop attending schools after their exams ended. And the results were declared between May 1 and May 5.

However the new circular made it compulsory for students to attend school till the results are declared. MLC of teacher’s constituency Kapil Patil raised the issue in House.

“What is the point of asking students to come to schools? Is there any syllabus? Is there any proper agenda before the teachers? So, it will be a good idea to revoke the new circular and let the old practice continue,” said Mr Patil.

Mr Tawde said that the circular is issued with good intentions. “We wanted to use this period positively for the benefit of students. The circular is revoked for this year but we will work on the quality of the circular and if necessary we will implement it again,” said Mr Tawde.
