3 dead, 5 injured as heavy rain lashes Mumbai

Mumbai: After a much-delayed monsoon, Mumbai received its first heavy rainfall of the season on Friday. Although, the rains came as a relief from the sweltering heat, there was no change in monsoon related problems in city.
Three persons died of electric shocks, while two others were injured in two separate incidents in the western suburbs, a spokesperson of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. According to the civic official, the deceased were identified as Kashima Yudiyar (60), a resident of Andheri (East), Rajendra Yadav (60) and Sanjay Yadav (24) — both from Goregaon (East). Two others suffered injuries in the Goregaon incident and were admitted to a local hospital
Three persons were injured when a portion of a wall collapsed in Dadar (East), he said, adding that they were admitted to the civic-run KEM Hospital.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation claimed that 100 per cent desilting work was completed and remedial measures were taken on all 255 chronic flooding spots in the city. However, these spots were waterlogged after the rainfall on Friday raising a question mark on BMC’s claims.

Several incidents of tree fall, electrocution, wall collapse and landslide were also reported on Friday which claimed three lives and injured five others, including a minor. A total of 14 instances of short circuit were reported by 6 pm.
“Latest satellite indicate enhanced rainfall activity will sustain over west coast including Mumbai, Thane and around,” said K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director general of meteorology, IMD, Mumbai.
