New rules for FYJC online admissions

Mumbai: Once the SSC results are declared, the admission process for students applying for first year junior college (FYJC) for the academic year 2018-19 will commence with several changes in the online admission process, making it easier for students, said state education department officials.

Hereon, students can notify the department whether they have secured a college seat, which in turn will ensure whether they remain in the admission process or not. Also, bifocal courses that include vocational courses and are meant for the science stream, and vocational courses meant for the commerce stream will have the online admission facility.

Each student has to create an account with the FYJC portal in order to register himself/herself into the admission process. However, in the new system, each account will have a ‘secure button’ for students where they can mark themselves if they have secured the seat or wish to wait for another college in the next admission round. “Once they click the button, we will be notified about the student securing a seat in a FYJC college which will automatically remove the student’s name from the admission process to make space for other candidates,” said an official of the department. Earlier, there was a lot of confusion due to lack of proper coordination between students, colleges and the
department. The secure button will help avoid these.

Also from now on, all bifocal and vocational courses/subjects will be added in the online admission process. The official added, “There are many such courses which will now be added to the list of subjects or courses in the online admission itself. The student, if interested, can select this option in the online portal itself instead of going the college (offline) way.”

After the class X examinations, the state education department will provide all students a FYJC booklet containing names of colleges, courses, and other relevant information regarding FYJC admissions. In yet another change this year, the department will add the cut-off percentage in the booklet.

Bifocal course

Bifocal courses comprise six vocational subjects including computer science, civil engineering, electrical and mechanical maintenance, which fall under the science stream. For commerce students, there are subjects such as information technology, Hindi etc. as bifocal courses.
