Mumbai: The last rites of Laxmi Gawli, the mother of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, popularly addressed as ‘Daddy’ by his followers, are expected to be performed late on Monday if  he is able to reach his home at Dagdi Chawl by noon from Nagpur. Gawli is currently lodged in a Nagpur jail while serving a life sentence for the 2007 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamalakar Jamsandekar. His lawyer, Mir Nagman Ali confirmed that Gawli has been granted parole and would be released on Monday.

However, according to Mr Girish Jaiswal, PA of Gawli’s daughter Geeta Gawli, the last rites will take place on Monday if Daddy makes it to Dagdi Chawl the same day because there are only two flights from Nagpur to Mumbai. “The first flight is at around 5 am and second is at around 8 pm.

“The procedure to complete formalities for Daddy’s release on parole has started but it is very unlikely that he would be able to catch a morning flight. And the flight in the evening is very late, so he will have to take some alternate transport and he may also take a chartered chopper to reach Mumbai,” said Mr Jaiswal.

According to sources at Dagdi Chawl, the body of Laxmi Gawli is still at Jaslok Hospital and would be brought to the chawl at the same time when Gawli reaches home.

Due to the serious condition of his mother, Gawli was already on parole. On April 23, he had moved an application seeking extension of the parole that was expiring in the morning of April 25.
