Mumbai: In the wake of the brutal death of Manju Shetye (38), an inmate of Byculla women's prison last Friday, which led to rioting by prisoners, members of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) led by its chief Vijaya Rahatkar visited the jail on Thursday evening.

Earlier in the day, the panel had summoned DIG (prisons) Swati Sathe to its Bandra office to inquire into the incident and appointed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. It has also sought a detailed report from the jail authorities across the state about their conditions, safety and security.

Meanwhile, a day after the Sheena Bora murder case accused Indrani Mukerjea told a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court that she was assaulted and threatened by the staff at Byculla’s women’s prison, the Nagpada police station has initiated an inquiry into the incident.
