Mumbai: There is surge noted in swine flu cases across the state, the directorate of health services (DHS) said on Saturday. The health minister Dr Deepak Sawant on Saturday conducted a meeting of communicable disease prevention and control committee on the backdrop of increasing number of swine flu patients in the state.

The number of deaths due to swine flu is on the rise. Around 88 people have died this year from January to September. The committee has the medicos from the civic and state-run hospitals, who reviewed the deaths and detection of swine flu cases. It has found that most deaths happened due to delay in proper treatment and late reporting of cases.

Now, the committee has decided that if the suspected patients do not show symptoms of recovery within 24 hours of medication, the private practitioners should go for administering Oseltamivir tablets.

The DHS shared the data, which stated; at present there are 892 swine flu pat-ients in the state. 81 patie-nts died and maximum are from Nasik and Pune. Between January 1 and Sept-ember 25, around 15,61,000 suspected patients were tested and 23,905 were adm-inistered Oseltamivir tabl-ets. Out of the 892 infected patients, 337 are in hospitals whereas 463 have been discharged.

Talking to The Asian Age, Dr Sawant said, “The protocol is being prepared by the health ministry to guide the private medical practitioners for administrating medicine for the treatment of suspected swine flu patients who are on ventilator.”

When asked if there’s any swine flu virus mutation noted, D. Sawant said, “There is no change in the virus of swine flu and the number of deaths are due delay in administrating the medicines, this conclusion has been drawn by the death audit committee of the state.”

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been assigned the work to report the supply and usage of tablets. 1,28,000 people in the state are given swine flu preventive vaccination from January to September.
