Wall collapse claims lives of man, 10-year-old son in Kalwa
Three persons were sleeping in the house at the time of the incident, when a mammoth mass of soil and boulders fell on the house.
Mumbai: The wall of a house collapsed at Konteshwar Nagar in Kalwa, Thane district, in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving a man and his 10-year-old son dead and the mother injured.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officials stated that the incident occurred due to a landslide and the condition of the hillock had been declared unsafe earlier.
The incident occurred around 12.10 am Tuesday at Adarsh Mitra Mandal chawl. According to Thane Municipal Corporation, a portion of the hillock caved in and fell on the wall of the deceased’s house, which later collapsed.
Three persons were sleeping in the house at the time of the incident, when a mammoth mass of soil and boulders fell on the house. “Birendra Jaiswar (40) and his son Sunny (10) were rushed to the hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. Birendra’s wife sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment,” said regional disaster management cell chief, Santosh Kadam.
The police and the fire brigade team rushed to the spot and evacuated the family members and took them to the hospital. Mrs Jaiswar is undergoing treatment at Kalwa’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital.
Around 19 people were evacuated from the chawl and shifted to a nearby school post the incident by the police and fire brigade.
The chawl, where the incident occurred, is close to Dyanganga School. As the Thane Municipal Corporation had declared the condition of the hillock as unsafe, 70 persons were shifted from there to the school.
The Thane district has been witnessing moderate to heavy rain this week. On July 29, an enclosed gallery of a four-storeyed residential building in Rabodi area of Thane collapsed.
While no injuries were reported, two motorbikes parked under the building were damaged.
