Mumbai: The Oshiwara police has begun an investigation into the alleged suicide of an aspiring actress, who flung herself from her residence in multi-storey building. Punjabi went to the terrace of the Kenwood building at Lokhandwala and flung herself to death at around 12.30 am on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Pearl Punjabi (25), who commited suicide over lack of opportunities in the entertainment industry. The actress was born and brought up in Mumbai. She tried her luck in modelling as well but failed to get good assignments.

The security officials of the building heard a loud thud and rushed to check and found Punjabi lying in a pool of blood. The locals informed the police and the unconscious youth was taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Talking about the incident, Bipin Kumar Thakur, a security guard employed at the apartment where the woman was residing said, “It happened between 12.15 and 12.30 am. There was some noise, I thought somebody was shouting on the road. We went there to check what was happe-ning. When I came back, I heard sounds from the third floor where she lived.”

The police said no suicide note was found on the spot. Reportedly, Punjabi was mentally disturbed and had frequent fights with her mother. She had allegedly attempted suicide twice before but was saved.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the girl was seeking work assignments and was disturbed as she was not finding one. She was suffering from depression since past few months,” said an officer of Oshiwara police.

The police will record the statement of deceased’s mother and her friends to ascertain more details in the case. The officials said that all angles are being probed to find out if reasons apart from profession drove her to commit
suicide.

An accidental death report has been registered in connection with the incident and further probe is underway.
