Mumbai: In the wake of the fire in Kamala Mills compound, state health minister Dr Deepak Sawant said that there was need for a super-specialty burns centre in the city.

He said he has asked for space in Malad’s Malwani area to start the centre, where there will be a skin bank facility for patients suffering more than 50 per cent burns. The centre will be ready in two years, he said.

Dr Sawant told The Asian Age, “It has become the need of the hour. We do not have a super facility designed for burn injury patients. Patients have to travel all the way to Vashi National Burns Centre. If we have a special burns unit in the city, we can treat patients with critical burn injuries.”

The burns unit will come up in the government-run Samanya Rugnalaya in Malwani area of Malad west. The plot belongs to the state government and a 30-bed hospital specially designed for patients with burns will be started in the next two years.
