Asking four allegedly drunk men to step away from his bike cost a 28-year-old engineering student, as he had to end up being badly injured. The incident occurred in Charkop, Kandivali, late on Thursday and according to the sources the victim was immediately rushed to a near by hospital, where he is still under treatment.

According to police sources, on Thursday night, four of the accused were sitting on the victim Sawant’s bike and drinking alcohol. On being asked to step away from the bike, they started abusing the victim and soon resorted to attacking him with bamboo canes, a cement block and knife. Police sources said Sawant received injuries on his head and chest and the locals had rushed him to a nearby hospital immediately.

According to the doctors of Oscar Hospital, where he is admitted, Sawant is still under observation and is in ICU. “He was on ventilator earlier. He has sustained fracture in legs and hand,” said Dr Rajesh Kakde.

The police came to know about the case after Sawant’s father registered a complaint against the four accused. During investigations they arrested one of the accused on Friday night while hunt for the other three is underway. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC against the four for assault, said senior police inspector Ramchandra Gaikwad of Charkop police station. “We have arrested 23-year-old Kundan Salian in connection with the case. He is a repeat offender and has cases like housebreaking registered against him,” inspector Gaikwad said.
