Two civic workers, who worked on a contractual basis, died on Monday afternoon after falling into a manhole while clearing a sewage pipeline.

Two civic workers, who worked on a contractual basis, died on Monday afternoon after falling into a manhole while clearing a sewage pipeline. Following the incident, the Samta Nagar police registered two accidental death cases.

According to police sources, the fire brigade was called to pull them out but when they were taken to the hospital, doctors pronounced them dead.

The incident occurred around 3 pm near Cambridge school at Thakur Complex. Two workers, Mehboob Balaswami Kumari (40) and Kari Karnappa Narsimha (30), were trying to clear a water-logged sewage pipeline. Following the incident, the fire brigade was summoned at about 3.12 pm and the duo was pulled out after sometime. Senior inspector of Samta Nagar Dilip Yadav said,

“Both of them were taken out by the fire brigade staff and were sent for medical treatment to a public hospital but doctors declared them dead around 5 pm. According to sources, both the deceased died due to suffocation in the sewage, while medical reports are yet to come.

After this, the police held a spot punchanama and recorded statements of witnesses, which revealed that it was an accident. The bodies were sent to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali. Along with it, a senior police official commented that their investigation was on.

Police officials said Kumari and Narsimha were from Telangana. In Mumbai, they were living in Kandarpada slums at Dahisar (west).
