Two people from Dombivali have been held for cheating at least 23 unemployed youths in Bhayander by offering them ‘government’ jobs in a Rs 23.5-lakh job scam. The two accused have been remanded in judicial custody after being produced before the Thane court on Friday.

Chandrakant Shinde (52) and Bhikaji Jangam (65), both residents of Dombivali, have been arrested for cheating the 23 unemployed youngsters by offering them fake government jobs in Mumbai Metro, the education departments of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and other ‘permanent’ jobs, said PSI Kranti S Patil of Bhayander police station.

Between November 2014 and May 2015, the duo took money from the youths under the ruse of offering them clerical posts in government offices, said Ms Patil. So much so, that the duo even gave fake appointment letters to the victims, and when some of the victims approached their offices ‘to report for duty’, they received the shock of their lives when the human resources department rejected the letters, saying they were fake and that no vacancies existed in the offices concerned, said Ms Patil. “That is when the victims approached us and we registered complaints for cheating, forgery and other allied sections of the IPC. They are in judicial custody after being produced before the Thane court,” said Ms Patil.

”The duo made contact with a retired principal of a school, Sudesh Gavai (40), and, on the sly, used him to lure the victims. We will also be questioning Gavai in this regard,” she added.
