Ahead of Mahim fair, residents submit complaint to BMC, MPCB on violators

Keeping in mind the noise pollution, which is created during the ten-day Mahim fair which will begin on December 25, local residents have submitted a written complaint on Wednesday to the Mumbai Police, BMC and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to take stern action against those who violate the noise pollution norms.

The document states that last year during the sandal procession in Mahim, the sound level was as high as 118 db as recorded by Awaaz Foundation. The noise continues even beyond the stipulated time limit of 10 pm.

This is in clear violation of noise rules and SC rulings, where the permissible sound limit is of 45db. This fact was reported to the Mumbai Police commissioner last year but no action was taken and hence they are informing them in advance this year to crack down on these violations.

Irfan Machiwala, who is among the five complainants, said, “We are not against any religion or religious celebrations but we residents of Mahim want the police to assure Right to Peace guaranteed under Article 21 of our Constitution.” The sandal procession is held daily and delegations will come from different parts to visit the dargah. Several lakh people come in trucks playing dhols and loud music throughout the day.
