An alert policeman saved a three-year-old girl from falling prey to a drunken man, who according to the police, wanted to rape her. The man had gone to a few places in search of prostitutes, but when he found none he allegedly kidnapped the child. However, a policeman attached to the DB Marg police station found his behaviour suspicious and stopped him. During the questioning by the policeman, the man could not give satisfactory answers and later admitted he had kidnapped the girl.
It was around 2 am on Tuesday when a DB Marg police patrolling team consisting of assistant sub-inspector C.K. Raorane and his team noticed the accused with the child near the DB Marg at Jalabai Street. The girl was crying and it caught the attention of the police.
Mr Raorane said, “I found it suspicious when I saw the man who could not even walk properly, holding on to a small girl and trying to hurry off. Initially the child was not crying but just after a few seconds she started crying. When we confronted the man, he could not answer who the girl was and where he was taking her. After five minutes, two waiters from a nearby street and a couple came running towards us. The couple told us they were the child’s parents. One of the waiters told us that the girl and her parents were sleeping on the footpath when he saw the accused take the girl away.”
Mr Raorane added that the accused was possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. During questioning, the accused confessed that he went to a few brothels but was thrown out as he did not have money so he kidnapped the girl instead.
