In a bid to save his sister from being strangled, a 10-year-old boy stabbed his brother-in-law to death in Vasai (east) on Sunday.

The incident took place, according to the police, on Sunday afternoon in Vaghripada area near the railway station in Vasai (east). The deceased Sagar Umarkhane (35), a small time businessman, was originally from Gujarat and was married to Lata Kawetiya, a resident of Vaghripada. The couple, however, used to quarrel frequently on domestic matters. Sagar was also a liquor addict and would physically abuse his wife often, said the police. Fed up with the torture, Lata moved to her parents’ home in Vasai, while four of their children stayed back in Gujarat.

On Sunday, Umarkhane visited Lata at her parents’ home where they got involved in a quarrel again. Things soon turned violent when Sagar started hitting his wife.

The fight was being witnessed by Lata’s 10-year-old brother who first asked his brother-in-law to not beat her sister but it provoked Sagar to try and strangle Lata. The child then rushed to help her with a kitchen knife in hand and stabbed Sagar on the chest and the right elbow. He was rushed to a hospital but the injury on his chest was fatal and he succumbed to it late in the evening, said sources.

The child has been arrested and sent to Bhiwandi child correction home.
