Water mixed with chilli powder thrown on a team of BMC officials by a woman resident during a demolition drive at ward number 207, Byculla east, on Wednesday entered the eyes of an assistant engineer who was present at the spot.

The victim was admitted to J.J. Hospital for eye treatment and later discharged. Officials said a FIR was lodged at Byculla (east) police station.

Recalling the incident, assistant engineer, Datta Garud (26), who is still experiencing a burning sensation in his eyes, said that as soon as he got his official order to demolish the illegal one plus one building, he went there with his team of senior engineers when suddenly water mixed with chilli powder fell on him from the top and directly entered his eyes. “That water also fell on my fellow colleagues who were present at the spot. Today, water mixed with chilli powder has been thrown on me but tomorrow, people may even throw iron pebbles and sharp stones. What is the guarantee that we will be safe when doing our duty,” he said.

DCP Pravin Padwal said, “We have arrested Taslima Shakir Zafer (28). A case has been registered under sections 353, 332, 341 and 354 of the IPC and further investigation is on. The culprit will not be spared.”
