A Delhi-based man, who, on the pretext of approving a Rs 1 lakh loan, conned a Kandivali-based club trainer of Rs 94,000, has been arrested by the cyber cell of Mumbai police. The accused, Bhanupratap Manpal Singh (25), a resident of Mahavir Enclave, Delhi, was arrested from his house on Tuesday while his partners are absconding and police is on the lookout for them.

Cyber cell sources said that Singh first got in touch over phone with complainant, Neetin Lalchandra Kanojia, who works as personal trainer at Ekta Terraces, Mahavir Nagar, Kandivali, and lured him with the promise of a personal loan at very low interest rates and without paperwork or guarantor. Singh later borrowed money from Mr Kanojia and never gave him the loan.

Earlier in March, Mr Kanojia received a phone call from Rohit Sharma, who said he was from Innovate India and similarly lured Mr Kanojia with the promise of a loan at low interest rates however Mr Kanojia disconnected the call. Later in the first week of April, Mr Kanojia received the same call and ultimately ended up asking for a loan of Rs 1 lakh. Thereafter, Singh started asking for money for paper work and told Mr Kanojia to deposit it in his account. Singh took around Rs 94,000 from Mr Kanojia via several instalments and never gave Mr Kanojia any loan, which led the latter to approach the police.

After Mr Kanojia lodged a complaint in the cyber cell, officials started tracking the phone from which he had got the calls and finally arrested Singh. Singh confirmed to the police that he had two to three close aides whom the police are now looking for. An official said that Singh had started a call centre in his area in Delhi and from there, started making calls to cheat people.

Officials are also checking if Singh and company have cheated others as well.
