Derailment of a goods train between Ankola and Gokarna on Tuesday evening, caused inconvenience not only to those commuting to and fro Konkan, but also Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu, who had to change trains to return to Mumbai following a tour of the region.

Mr Prabhu was to board the Matsyagandha Express train from either Chiplun or Ratnagiri. However, the train was cancelled due to the derailment of the goods train.

The minsiter finally had to board the Konkan Kanya Express, which departed from Madgaon at 4.45 pm on Tuesday and would arrive at CST by 5.50 am on Wednesday.

According to officials, while four trains — 22149 Ernakulam-Pune-Poorna Express, 70105 Madgoan-Mangalore DEMU Passenger, 56640 Mangalore-Madgoan Passenger and 22636 Mangalore-Madgaon Intercity Express — were cancelled, three trains — 12134 Mangaluru junction-CSTM Express, 12619 Lokmanya Tilak (T)- Mangalore Matsyagandha Express and 22150 Pune-Ernakulam Express — were rescheduled.
