The United Nation recently discussed issues of atrocities against women and ‘Stri Adhar Kendra’, an NGO run by Shiv Sena leader Dr Neelam Gorhe was one of the four selected NGOs from India that made an effective suggestion to the United Nation’s International Women Commission’s 60th conference held in New York. The final draft of the discussion will be published soon and will be implemented across the world by 2030, Dr Gorhe said.

The world conference on the status of women was held at UN headquarters in New York where Dr Gorhe presided over one of the sessions. “The recommendations will be sent to all countries for their nod and the final agenda will be implemented which will remain in existence till 2030,” Dr Gorhe said.

The Shiv Sena spokesperson said, “We spoke about the fundamental freedom of women, about their rights and demanded they should be involved in mainstream of politics to achieve gender equality. But the situation is very difficult in many countries, including Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as in African and Gulf countries.”

Dr Gorhe added, “At least in India or in Maharashtra we get a positive response from police officers who help us resolve women related issues. But women in other countries are not so lucky.” The women members agreed on the draft on women empowerment and the link to sustainable development. Kansoli Shiwe, a rape victim from Rwanda, narrated her story before the General House, where more than 100 representatives were present.
