The Pant Nagar police has arrested a 40-year-old Thane resident for allegedly creating a fake Facebook profile of his wife and her male friend. He went on to write objectionable content about them on their profiles. The accused suspected that his wife was having an extra-marital affair with her friend and hence committed the offence. The police has also arrested the brother of the accused who knew what his brother was doing and helped him by letting him access the Internet service registered on his name. According to police, the incident took place in November last year when accused Kaushal Mehta (changed name), a Thane-Ghodbunder Road resident, decided to do something to defame his wife Jinal (changed name) whom he married around 15 years ago. The couple has a 14-year-old daughter and had developed a rift in their relationship a few years ago and they are in the process of finalising a divorce. Mehta is unemployed now and his wife Jinal runs a small business and has a colleague at her work place. “Mehta suspected that his wife and her colleague were having an affair. Hence, in order to defame her, Mehta created fake e-mail accounts of her wife and her collegue. With the help of those fake ids, he then created fake Facebook profiles for both of them and wrote objectionable content on their walls pertaining to their alleged illicit relationship,” said an officer of the Pant Nagar police station. When Jinal, who lives with her parents in Pant Nagar, Ghatkopar (east), learnt about this, she immediately approached Pant Nagar police in November last year and registered an offence under Section 66-(a)(d) of Information Technology Act against her husband.
