The residents of certain housing societies in P North ward have alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not taken action against the illegal dumping of garbage in their area, which is leading to health hazards. These societies in Malad’s Evershine Nagar have complained about the garbage being dumped in a four-acre plot right in the middle of the buildings that the aggrieved residents live in. They have alleged that they are tired of asking the civic body for help and claim they have been staying in unhygienic conditions for more than three months now.
The residents of Ramchandra Lane (extension) added that one of the dumpers used to dispose of the garbage in the plot once even had a dead dog in it.
U.D. Sharma, the chairman of Krishna Vastu society, which faces the dumping ground concerned, said, “There are at least two dumpers that come here, drop the garbage and leave. Moreover, there are non-serviced dumpers that aren’t used for any purpose, but are parked on the road here for no reason. There are nearly 20 dumpers, both small and big ones, which use this ground for disposing of garbage.”
Danish Shah, a society member from Green Acre building, added, “The situation in the area is unbearable. Mosquitoes and flies have increased to such an extent that we all keep our windows and balconies closed. We have approached the local ward office several times, but only to be turned down.”
Indu Panchal, three of whose family members have fallen ill, said, “Most of the families who live in houses facing the dumping ground have had family members falling ill due to the dirt being spread because of the garbage. What is the use of approaching the BMC when the matter is falling on deaf ears ”
Aslam Shaikh, the MLA of the area, said, “Despite me personally taking up the matter with the ward office, they haven’t come up with any solution to this illegal dumping.”
Sangeeta Hasnale, the P North Ward officer, remained unavailable for comment.
