Two serial burglars, one having committed 20 crimes across Mumbai and the other 50, and wanted in at least four more crimes, were arrested in the early hours after a dramatic chase by the patrolling police team from Meghwadi police station. One of them, Narayan Isaque Tewar, alias Murgan (45), is said to have escaped on two previous occasions by trying to harm policemen who tried to chase and nab him.

The duo — both school dropouts — had already committed two burglaries in Meghwadi’s jurisdiction in Jogeshwari (east) this month and had done a recce of a jewellery shop to be burgled. A police team comprising API Wahid Pathan and constables Y. Mahale, V. Jadhav, S. Gavde, T. More and M. Deshmukh nabbed the duo.

They were stopped near JVLR at 5 am on January 9 and during inquiry, they cooked up a story about coming there to meet a relative and gave fake names. However, their bluff was caught after which they pushed the constables and ran off in different directions. However, the teams chased them on foot for around 100 metres before arresting them.

Murgan has about 50 burglary cases and got out of jail early last year, while Ganpat Chawda (36) got out of jail this year. Both met at Arthur Road Jail and have been convicted in at least 10 crime cases.

Murgan is wanted in crime cases CB unit X, Gamdevi police, Pydhonie police and Agripada police. In one case at Pydhonie, Murgan threw an iron rod at a police constable from the detection branch and evaded arrest while in the second case at Gamdevi, he sped away in a car almost hitting a constable in the process.

The Meghwadi police has recovered cash and valuables the duo had stolen in two burglaries. At Gamdevi last year, they burgled a posh clothes showroom and escaped in a car. They could be seen on CCTV.
