Mumbai police to go online with digital kiosks

The Mumbai Police is gearing up to set up digital kiosks at all police stations as part of its efforts towards reducing paper usage and keeping up with available technology. The kiosks are part of the Mumbai Police Information System (MPIS) and the digital private network for police personnel.

The digital kiosks, which will be at all the police stations, will make all interdepartmental news including police notices, transfer orders, internal memos available to all officers.

“The officers from the computer cell will train one officer from each police station. They will be trained to not just use the system to obtain information but also to upload things too,” said an officer, further adding, “It will save time that a officer spent travelling to update his senior officers or trying to get in touch with an officer from a different police station or zone. With the new system they will get information about happenings not just in police stations but also about special units like the Juvenile Aid and Protection Unit (JAPU).” Once the system is in place, the trained personnel will train other officers. Currently, the police notice system has gone online. “We have been given email ids and passwords and by midnight we can access the police notice. This notice contains all record of good detections of various police stations or major crimes that have happened in an area. Then with the permission of our seniors, we upload these on our website,” said another officer.

Sources inform that the kiosks will be in place by July and the training will begin soon after. “We are in the process of procuring these kiosks and setting up the internal network.

We have updated the email ids and phone number of all senior officers and currently this is being used tosend only copies of police notices. Once the digital kiosks are in place, everybody will be able to access it,” he said.
